Li Changchun, a Communist Party of China (CPC) senior official, told a conference on cultural and ethical progress on Tuesday that efforts should be made to better serve the cultural and spiritual needs of people and improve the society’s overall cultural environment.

China should seize the opportunity of the 30th anniversary of reform and opening up and this year’s Beijing Olympics to enhance the country’s cultural and ethical progress, said Li, who is a member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee’s Political Bureau and also Chairman of the Central Commission for Guiding Ethic and Cultural Progress.

“In promoting cultural and ethical progress, we should hold high the great banner of socialism with Chinese characteristics, follow the guidance of Deng Xiaoping’s theory and the important thoughts of Three Representatives, thoroughly apply the Scientific Outlook on Development, continue to emancipate the mind, and shoulder the responsibilities the 17th CPC National Congress has put forward and try to create a better ideological and media environment for building a moderately prosperous society in all respects,” he said.

State Councilor and vice-chairperson of the Central Commission for Guiding Ethic and Cultural Progress Chen Zhili also attended the meeting and advised on how to enhance cultural and ethical progress.
