Taiwan é um foco crítico na geopolítica do século XXI. O aumento das tensões estratégicas entre a China e os EUA, a insistência de Pequim em acelerar a reunificação e a ascensão do independentismo na ilha determinam um grave triângulo de instabilidade. Após a eclosão da guerra na Ucrânia, existe a preocupação com a possibilidade de um conflito armado na Ásia que teria potencial suficiente para alterar a hegemonia regional e global. O resultado das eleições legislativas e presidenciais que terão lugar no próximo mês de janeiro de 2024 na ilha poderá acentuar os riscos ou, pelo contrário, abrir esperanças de moderação nas perspetivas. De uma forma ou de outra, o fim do statu quo está em jogo e entrou na fase de contagem regressiva.

Abstract

Taiwan is a critical focus in 21st century geopolitics. The increase in strategic tensions between China and the US, Beijing’s insistence on accelerating reunification and the rise of the independence movement on the island determine a severe triangle of instability. After the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, there is concern about the possibility of an armed conflict in Asia that would have sufficient potential to alter regional and global hegemony. The result of the legislative and presidential elections that will take place next January 2024 on the island could accentuate the risks or, on the contrary, create hope for moderation in the outlook for the region. One way or another, the end of the status quo is on the table and has entered the countdown phase.
